The Real Fight isn’t about fists, medals, or titles. It’s about the battles we face within — when life changes in an instant, and every breath becomes a test of courage.

Kim Dalton was a martial artist, teacher, and fighter in every sense. But her greatest fight wasn’t on the mat — it was against cancer. Through pain, love, and unbreakable spirit, she found something far more powerful than fear: hope.

This deeply moving memoir takes readers inside a journey of strength, vulnerability, and the search for meaning when the odds seem impossible. Guided by discipline, love, and the martial-arts spirit, Kim’s story reminds us that real victory isn’t about surviving — it’s about living fully, no matter the circumstances.

💫 A must-read for anyone who’s faced loss, sought resilience, or simply needs to believe that the human spirit can rise again.

BY MID JANUARY I WAS STILL WAITING FOR THE OPERATION –Prof hadn’t told me he was on annual leave until the end of January. The cancer was catching up with me – I knew I was sick. My legs ached continuously, a deep throbbing pain that painkillers didn’t seem to reach, most likely caused from the tumour’s pressure on the inferior vena cava. My energy drained away and there were times when I found it all but impossible to keep my eyes open. I felt as if I was wading through quicksand. We tried to surf every day but my time in the water became shorter and shorter and my times asleep or crashed out on the couch became longer and longer. Coupled with my physical concerns, the wait was draining me emotionally. Perhaps the waiting was worse than anything. The longer the tumour stays inside me without being treated, the more likely it is to spread to other areas in my body. In my mind every day was critical.
